When temperatures hit record lows and winter is in full force in the majority of the country, it’s a great time for those in colder climates to escape to Arizona. The desert has a lot of appeal this time of year; temperatures in the 70’s, clear skies, sunshine that never ends….and fantastic winter golf conditions! But there is no better time to visit Arizona than mid-February through March as the Valley of the Sun welcomes Cactus League Spring Training!
The greater Phoenix area welcomes 15 major league baseball teams for for Cactus League play each Spring. While pre-season baseball is an appealing feature for the surrounding residents, the Cactus League draws quite the crowd of out-of-towners escaping the cold to catch their favorite baseball team in Spring Training action.
If you happen to be a fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks or Colorado Rockies and plan to catch some Cactus League games this spring, you’re in luck! These teams stadiums have close and easy access to McDowell Mountain Golf Club – a premier public golf course in Scottsdale. Located off the 101 freeway in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, McDowell Mountain Golf Club is a “must-play” destination for all Cactus League fans.
With most Cactus League games starting around 1:00pm, there is plenty of time to get in a round of morning golf before catching a game at the ballpark. With 18-holes of Championship golf in a beautiful desert setting, McDowell Mountain offers a premier golf experience for golfers of all skill levels. After your round at MMGC, relax on the patio of the Mesquite Grille and enjoy lunch or a few drinks with friends.
In 2011, McDowell Mountain Golf Club, under the ownership and direction of Phil Mickelson and his business manager, “Coach” Steve Loy completed a significant golf course enhancement and renovation. McDowell Mountain Golf Club now features a premier golfing experience for both pros and beginners. The course revisions, overseen by golf course architect Randy Heckenkemper, include widening the playing corridors, reshaping fairways, adding additional teeing areas, and strategic waste bunkers, and much more! “We really wanted to make the golf course that was family friendly and fun to play,” stated Phil Mickelson. “By strategically adding grass in and cleaning up the desert areas, making the corridors much bigger, we feel like we made it a much more enjoyable experience. We now feel like this is a fun experience for everyone,” added Mickelson.
